How to play Klondike Solitaire

Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, building each suit from Ace to King. The seven tableau columns are built downward in alternating colors (red on black, black on red). Only Kings can fill an empty column. Click the stock pile to draw cards into the waste; when empty, click again to recycle.

Controls

Click any card to auto-move it — Solitaire picks the best legal destination (foundation first, then tableau). To move a stack, click the bottom card. Empty stock recycles automatically. Use AUTO-COMPLETE when all cards are face-up to finish in one click.

About Klondike Solitaire

Klondike is the canonical Solitaire — a single-player card game using a standard 52-card deck where the goal is to build four foundation piles from Ace to King by suit. Originated in late-19th-century North America and bundled with Microsoft Windows since 1990, Klondike is the most-played card game in the world.

How to play

The deal puts 28 cards into a 7-column tableau (1 card in column 1, 2 in column 2, … 7 in column 7) — only the bottom card in each column is face-up. The remaining 24 cards form the stock; the four foundation slots and the waste pile start empty. Build the tableau downward in alternating colors (e.g., black 7 on red 8); flip a face-down card when the cards on top of it are moved. Build foundations upward by suit, starting from Ace. You may move the top card of the waste, the top of any tableau column, or any face-up run as a group.

Win condition & solvability

Win by moving all 52 cards onto the foundations. Solvability with perfect play: ~80% Draw 1, ~5% Draw 3. The casual win rate is much lower because most human players don't backtrack optimally. Allowing unlimited undo nearly closes the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I win Klondike?

Build all four foundations from Ace to King by suit. Use the tableau (down, alternating colors) and the stock-waste cycle to feed cards onto the foundations. The game ends when all 52 cards have moved up.

What does smart-click do?

Auto-moves the clicked card to its best legal destination — usually a foundation if eligible, otherwise the most useful tableau column.

Draw 1 vs Draw 3?

Draw 1 deals one stock card at a time, directly playable. Draw 3 deals three face-up but only the top is playable, making the game far harder. Draw 1 wins ~80% of deals; Draw 3 ~5%.

Are all deals winnable?

No. With perfect Draw 1 play, ~80–82% of random deals are solvable. Some are mathematically dead from the deal.

What is the talon?

The combined stock + waste pile. Stock starts with 24 face-down cards; clicking deals to the waste. When stock empties, the waste typically recycles back — usually unlimited times.
